Romancing with AI this Valentine’s Day
Women across the globe and especially in the US can expect Valentine’s Day messages from their partners that would make them swoon. That’s not because lovers have become more romantic this year. Instead, these amorous messages would most likely be created by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
A recent survey by McAfee Research highlights the increasing use of AI tools in Americans’ love lives, particularly on Valentine’s Day. The survey indicates that 45 per cent of men plan to use AI to craft love messages, a notable increase from last year’s 30 per cent.
“Despite concerns about misinformation from AI, more Americans (39%) are turning to AI for Valentine’s Day messages compared to the previous year,” the study says. It further reveals, AI is being utilized to enhance online dating profiles and communication, with 31 per cent encountering scammers.
While some respondents express distrust towards AI-generated content, the effectiveness of AI in garnering interest and responses is evident, with 69% reporting better outcomes using AI-generated content.
However, quite a lot of women, or even men who get AI-generated romantic messages aren’t likely to be pleased. There are fears that some recipients of such love messages might feel offended or worse, cheated since they weren’t written with any sentiments by the partner and instead, were penned by AI resources.
Whether or not such AI generated romantic messages would cause relationships to collapse or survive is yet to be seen. According to the survey, 57 per cent of respondents stated they would feel potentially hurt or offended, should they get an AI generated romantic message from their partner.
Interestingly, Americans send 145 million Valentine’s Day greeting cards every year while lovers exchange about 63 million SMS text messages. Other common forms of expressing love nowadays are through Facebook and Instagram posts as well as WhatsApp messages. It remains to be seen how many of these romantic messages would be AI generated. The figure is likely to remain unknown because men aren’t expected to disclose whether or not they used AI to generate their love messages.
However, as the old adage goes: “All is fair in love and war.” By that corollary, AI generated romantic messages can be viewed as acceptable. Particularly because millions of men fail and flounder when it comes to expressing their romantic feelings in their own words. Hence, the use of AI to fill this need would be fairly justified, given the fact that the person has at least made the effort to create and send a romantic message to their partner.
