World’s First Rules on Use of AI Go for Approval on 13 March

The first laws in the world for the safe use and control of Artificial Intelligence technologies and tools will be up for approval by the 27 member states of the European Union on Wednesday.

These rules are the first in the world to ensure the safe use of AI and its related technologies while ensuring these aren’t manipulated for any reason.

The EU rules are expected to cover two main fields: the use of AI for simple purposes and AI tools for complex uses. For example, medical devices that use AI will have to undergo stringent testing and require clearances from all EU member states before they’re sold or available in these 27 countries.

The same laws will apply to AI and generative AI tools that could be misused for creating Deepfake videos and audios or generate text by manipulation. The EU laws are aimed at safeguarding life and intellectual property.

The EU is also grappling with issues such as bias and misinformation that AI tools can generate. Therefore, the draft laws are expected to carry clauses that require prior testing and clearances from member states to make sure that they’re free from racial and other biases and aren’t used for spreading misinformation.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company that launched ChatGPT and other models has already indicated they will exit the EU zone if their AI tools fail to meet stringent regulations set by the 27-nation conglomerate. Others might follow suit or adapt their AI tools to meet strict EU specifications.
