OpenAI Launches ChatGPT 4o

OpenAI Launches ChatGPT 4o

ChatGPT 4o, a newer version of the flagship ChatGPT 3.5 was released to the public on Monday by its creators, OpenAI. While the basic version of ChatGPT 4o will be available free for all, the superior, ChatGPT 4o Pro will be provided on a subscription basis, said Mira Murati, Chief Technology Officer at OpenAI.

Following the launch of ChatGPT 4o, the older versions, especially ChatGPT 4 which costs $20 per month will also be available free to users, according to an OpenAI press release issued on Monday.

“GPT 4o is much better than any existing model at understanding and discussing the images you share. For example, you can now take a picture of a menu in a different language and talk to GPT-4o to translate it, learn about the food’s history and significance, and get recommendations.

In the future, improvements will allow for more natural, real-time voice conversation and the ability to converse with ChatGPT via real-time video. For example, you could show ChatGPT a live sports game and ask it to explain the rules to you,” said Murati at an event held to launch ChatGPT 4o.

She revealed that the company has also changed the overall look of ChatGPT 4o by making it appear more user-friendly and simple. “You can now have voice conversations with ChatGPT directly from your computer, starting with Voice Mode that has been available in ChatGPT at launch, with GPT 4o’s new audio and video capabilities coming in the future.

Whether you want to brainstorm a new idea for your company, prepare for an interview or have a topic you’d like to discuss, tap the headphone icon in the bottom right corner of the desktop app to start a voice conversation,” Murati said during her presentation.

A total of 20 different languages were used as representatives for the new tokenizer compression for ChatGPT 4o. These include Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil, Marathi, Hindi, Urdu, Arabic, Farsi, Russian, Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Japanese, Turkish, Italian, German, Spanish, French and English. This allows for faster and more efficient translations of text and audio where necessary.

“We recognize that GPT 4o’s audio modalities present a variety of novel risks. Today we are publicly releasing text and image inputs and text outputs. Over the upcoming weeks and months, we’ll be working on the technical infrastructure, usability via post-training, and safety necessary to release the other modalities.

For example, at launch, audio outputs will be limited to a selection of preset voices and will abide by our existing safety policies. We will share further details addressing the full range of GPT 4o’s modalities in the forthcoming system card,” Murati said.

GPT 4o’s text and image capabilities were opened on Monday for general users in ChatGPT. “We are making GPT 4o available in the free tier, and to Plus users with up to 5x higher message limits. We’ll roll out a new version of Voice Mode with GPT 4o in alpha within ChatGPT Plus in the coming weeks,” Murati added.
